Fine Aggregate Sieve Analysis

Sieve Analysis

Civilinforms

Purpose:

To determine the particle size distribution of fine aggregates by sieving as per IS: 2386 (Part I) - 1963.

 Apparatus used:

A set of IS Sieves of sizes -4.75mm, 2.36mm, 1.18mm, 600m, 300m, 150m and 75m

Balance or scale with an accuracy to measure 0.1 percent of the weight of the test sample

 Procedure:

The test sample is dried to a constant weight at a room temperature of 110 + 5 C and weight.

The air- dry sample shall be weighed and sieves successively on the appropriate sieves starting with the largest.

Before using the sieves it should be cleaned. Take 1000 grams of fine aggregate, it should be shaken for a period of not less than 2 minutes.

Lumps of fine particles, if present may be broken by gentle pressure of fingers against the side of sieve. Light brushing with a soft brush on the underside of the sieve may be used clear the sieve opening.

On completing the sieving, the material retained on each sieve, shall be weighed.

The cumulative weight passing each sieve shall be calculated as a percentage of the total sample weight.
