In a statement, the former chief minister stated that the DMK campaigned on ensuring the availability of river sand at a reasonable price for the public, but that the price had risen uncontrollably.

When the open market price was around Rs 8,500 per unit, the government recently announced that sand would be available in quarries at Rs 1,000 per unit for the public and lorry owners at a specified time.

Even though new guidelines have been established, private players are selling sand at Rs 13,600 per unit in several areas, including Chennai. According to reports, the high rise in the price of sand is also due to transportation costs, according to OPS.

He claimed that the price increase had harmed the poor and middle-income groups, as building contractors had raised the cost of construction.
