Determination of dry density of soil by core cutter method || civil engineering

Soil core test

SCOPE:

It covers the method for the determination of the inplace density of fine grained natural or compacted soil free from aggregates using a core cutter.

Field density test by core cutter method

APPARATUS:

 1)Cylindrical core cutter
 2)steel Dolly
 3)steel rammer
 4)balance
 5)palette knife
 6)steel rule
 7)grafting tool
 8)straight edge.

 SHORT PROCEDURE:

The internal volume of the core cutter in cubic centimetre should be calculated from its dimensions which should be measured to the nearest 0.25 mm (Vc).

The core should be weighted to the nearest gram (Wc).

Steel Doli should be placed on top of the core cutter and latter should be rammed down verticaly into the soil layer until only about 15 mm of the dolly protrudes a above surface.

The cutter should then be dug out of the surrounding soil care being taken to allow some soil to project from the lower end of the cutter.
the ends of the soil core shall then be trimmed flat to the ends of the cutter by means of the straight edge.

The cutter containing the soil core should be weighted to the nearest to gram (Ws).
the soil core should be removed from the cutter and representative sample should be placed in an airtight container and its water content determined.

 Bulk density:

 Where,
Ws= weight of soil and core cutter (g)
Wc= weight of core cutter (g)
Vc= volume of core cutter (cm3)

 Dry density:

 Where,
 rb= bulk density
W= water content of the soil (%) Water content % = ((wet weight of soil - dry weight of soil) / dry weight of the soil))× 100

 Note,

The dry density of the compacted soil, it should be achieve minimum 95% of the Maximum dry density of that soil, hence ok.
